Nisa left her home planet to pursue her dream of being a ship’s engineer, but she ended up waiting tables in a seedy station bar and running from a man who is convinced she is a prostitute. After she’s caught breaking into Cas and Sutheo’s room to escape, the two men offer her a real chance to use her education.

Nisa can sense the chemistry between the three of them. Would working with the two men really be a good idea? Can she trust them to deliver on their offer of a job and safe passage to a better station?

Cas and Sutheo want Nisa badly—both for her skills and her body. But the emotional baggage from their past relationships holds them back. And what could they really offer a woman of her intellect and skills anyway?

STORY EXCERPT

This little Evran was an interesting mix, one minute shy and trying to hide herself, then next revealing she was bold enough to break into a seldom-used suite.

“If you leave here now, the fat Padient will be waiting for you,” Cas warned.

She gave a quick look at Cas. “I’ll use the maintenance tubes.”

Sutheo managed not to choke. She was ready to crawl through the tiny access tubes in three-inch heels and a mini-dress to escape.

“Why don’t you use the shower? No watching,” he added hastily as she snapped her head to look at him with a little frown. “Then we can see about getting you back to your room.”

She was silent, clearly not willing to trust them.

He didn’t blame her. Evidently, she wasn’t used to dealing with anyone she could trust. And though neither he nor Cas would harm her or force her, how was she to know that?

“Look,” Cas started, “I know you don’t know us but so far we haven’t turned you into station authorities or the fat guy. And I’ll say up front that we’re not asking for sexual favors in return for anything. Go ahead and use the shower and we’ll get you back to your room, okay?”

When Cas wanted, he had this voice and some sort of body language, telepathy vibe thing that made little kids, women, and station cats trust him, even though his size and toughness should scare the crap out of them.

It seemed to work. The Evran nodded and un-slouched herself. She headed to the facilities, not looking at either of them.

“Hang on,” said Sutheo. He headed to his bedroom and came out with a robe. He tossed it to her. “That might cover more than your, ah, dress.”

She caught it and continued into the facilities, head hanging.

There was silence for a long minute after the door closed behind her.

“That was unexpected.”

“Really, Cas? I mean Evran women are so common off Evra, one dressed as a hooker is almost a cliché.”

Cas chuckled, used to Sutheo’s sarcasm. “I don’t actually think I’ve seen an Evran woman before.”

“Well, when they’re practically not allowed to leave the planet…” Sutheo shook his head at their interesting views on emigration. “I’m going to order her some clothes. She can’t parade around in that.”

“I think I’ll help.”

Sutheo pulled up some ready-made dresses on the viewer in the room. A deep maroon colored, off-shoulder gown caught his eye.

“Are you kidding me?” Cas snorted. “Here.”

His friend searched the database and found a pair of black trousers and a maroon tunic and hit “purchase.”

“She is not going to wear a gown without thinking that we’re trying to buy her. The shoes will still be horrible to walk in, but at least they’re black.” Cas walked over to the delivery pad and picked up the clothing as it materialized.

He threw them on the couch and went to his room to put on some clothing.

Sutheo had to admit, if only to himself, that Cas was right. He forgot sometimes that women in The Treaty planets didn’t generally wear the formal clothing he remembered from his upbringing.

Sutheo had been raised in The Tride—a corporate alliance at the edge of The Treaty. He was the son of one of the corporation owners. There were seven owner-families, all vying for a greater percentage. Each family was obscenely wealthy but all they did with their lives was spend money, scheme, and backstab.

Sutheo hated it. A Memphean nanny and her husband raised him. They had managed to instil some pride in him, some sense of accomplishment. They raised him to understand the value of working for what he achieved.

Having a trust fund was handy, but hollow. He was happy to leave his scheming, backstabbing family behind and make his own way.

He and Cas were a successful partnership in Perihelion Traders. PT was a group of ships that traded all over The Treaty territory. They specialized in the more dangerous routes. Routes near The Fringe meant they had to look out for pirates or the organized crime unit called The Pedet. Routes near The Tride were equally hazardous. If they thought they wouldn’t get caught, The Tride would take them out just as fast as a pirate.

He heard the door to the facilities open and the Evran stepped out in his robe, her mini wadded up in her hand, shoes dangling from her fingers.

Somehow she looked much more fetching in his robe than her hooker garb. Barefoot and lacking any makeup, she was stunning. Her eyes were wary as she surveyed the two men. Her light hair fell to beyond her shoulders and the contrast against her dark brown skin was unusual and beautiful.

Sutheo’s cock took notice, again.
